Sarah Chang born December 10, 1980 in Philadelphia as Sarah Yong-ju Chang.
Sarah Chang’s parents are from South Korea. It is not related to the Korean cellist Chang Han-na. Her violin teacher was Dorothy DeLay at the Juilliard School in New York, where her father, the violinist Min-Soo Chang, also learned. Her mother Myoung Jun Chang is a composer. At the age of four she began playing the violin, and at the age of five she performed for the first time in public. At the age of about 6, she began to study at Juilliard during the week, during the week she went to school in the suburb of Philadelphia. At eight, she made her debut at Carnegie Hall with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra under Zubin Mehta with Niccolò Paganini’s No. 1 concert. At nine she made her first record recording.
She has performed with all leading orchestras, in the German-speaking world with the Berlin Philharmonic and the Vienna Philharmonic. She also performed with practically all world-famous conductors such as Zubin Mehta, Riccardo Muti and Kurt Masur. She is also good friends with Plácido Domingo. Her visit to Seoul with the London Philharmonic Orchestra 2001 attracted 45,000 concertgoers. This made the concert the best selling of the year. Also exceptional was a 2002 concert in North Korea with a mixed North and South Korean orchestra.
She plays a violin by Guarneri del Gesù from the year 17.
