Foundation and first years (1996-1999)

Martin, Berryman, Buckland and Champion met as students at University College London who founded and in September 1996 a band. Martin studied Greek and Latin, Buckland Mathematics, Astrophysics and Astronomy and Champion anthropology. Berryman initially studied engineering and later architecture. Unlike all the other band members, he completed no study.

Chris Martin and Jonny Buckland, who met at the orientation week at college, were the first members of the band. They first played in a band called “Pectoralz” until Guy Berryman, a classmate of the two joined the band. Originally, the four members formed the band under the name “Starfish”. Under this name the band first played a few gigs in smaller clubs in Camden. Phil Harvey, a fellow student and friend of Chris, was hired for this purpose as a manager.

In March 1998 the Safety EP, of which only 500 copies were published appeared. This served mostly as a demo, so only went 50 copies in the official sales. The EP is thus a rarity and is traded among collectors enormously high. Coldplay were taken then from the small independent label Fierce Panda Records. The first release was the Brothers and Sisters EP, which was recorded in February 1999 in just four days.

In the spring of 1999 Coldplay signed a five-album deal with Parlophone, where they are still under contract. After her first appearance at Glastonbury, the band went into the studio to record their third EP The Blue Room, 5000 units went on sale from October. In the production there were arguments within the band, so that Champion was thrown by Martin from the band, but was brought back shortly afterwards. To avoid further trouble, the four decided, rules within the band introduce: 1. Profits are shared, 2 Drug use leads to dismissal from the band.
